FFXIV ARR: More Than Just a Rebirth?

At what point will we ever talk about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn without having to refer to the first, much reviled, 1.0 version of the game?

By all accounts, FFXIV ARR is a completely new game. In fact, FFXIV ARR is not only a good game when compared to FFXIV 1.0, it's good in it's own right. It's getting overwhelmingly good reviews from the player base, so why can't we escape the memory of that first debacle? In article after article, the good press FFXIV ARR receives is accompanied by an equal portion of skepticism and doubt.

It seems that reviewers can't start a conversation about FFXIV ARR without first drawing attention to the failures of FFXIV 1.0. Now, it's more than fair for this to be true and I'm not surprised. However, what will it take for 1.0 to drop off of the discussion? Better yet, when will it be the foot note, instead of the key note, of every FFXIV ARR discussion?

Do we all do this? I find myself frequently referring to my 1.0 experiences and drawing nearly constant comparisons between the 1.0 and ARR versions of the game. After reading the recent reviews that are coming out, I was stuck by how central the 1.0 version of the game is to understanding how well FFXIV ARR is shaping up. It's a marvel how amazingly well Yoshida has flipped this game. For those of us who were part of 1.0, it's miraculous and somehow adds to the glory of the rebirth. However, I wonder what effect this 1.0 talk has on new players, new MMO fans, and old FFXIV 1.0 defectors. When they read these reviews or hear us talking about 1.0, what effect does it have?

For the reviewers, there seems to be a pervasive doubt cast over everything good in FFXIV ARR. Are these questions being asked by more than game reviewers? For those of us who just did the beta, these questions are silly! We already know the answer to these:

The answer is resoundingly positive. A large majority of the players I've talked to, say FFXIV ARR more than makes up for all the sins of FFXIV 1.0. To us, it would seem that these reviewers either played too little beta, or perhaps they simply can't be seen to completely let down their critical guard and fall all over themselves for FFXIV ARR. It's almost fashionable to be cynical these days. At the very least, people want to seem "on the fence" about this game because we were so betrayed by FFXIV 1.0. It's hard to give ourselves over to the hype and not wonder if we will be disappointed yet again.FFXIV

Or will we make Square Enix perpetually pay for that one time they abused our trust.

I personally lost more than a $1000.00 USD by investing in a new PC and equipment for FFXIV 1.0. If anybody deserves to be bitter and hold a grudge -- it's me. FFXIV ARR Open Beta and Early Access Dates

Well it's official, FFXIV ARR Open Beta will officially start on August 17th, 2013! Early access will start August 24th and roll straight into launch without interruption.

As I've stated before, there are some things you will want to consider before you get started. For the current news and information I have not provided, simply go to the Live Letter thread and read the four glorious pages of updates. I am currently trying my best to keep up with information without my own internet connection. Since July 27th, I've been without an internet connection and have been loitering at places like Starbucks and using the odd insecure network around my apartment. So briefly, I will touch on a couple of notables:

1. Beta Phase 4 will start one day early, August 16th, for those of you who were already accepted to closed beta. This is a load of horse manure. I truly feel bad for those of you not lucky enough to get into closed beta, you lose twice now. It's hard not to see this as neglect. First you get denied for closed beta and now you get to sit on your hands for 24 hours watching us have fun... bum deal.

2. Beta Phase 4 is only 2 days long. WTF!? Ok, it's free for everybody and early access is only three days long. Does that make you guys happy? I feel like that's cheap for everyone. Short open beta and early access windows may be fair, but they certainly do NOT feel like a reward for our loyalty. The brief access makes it feel much more like they're merely throwing us a bone. Keeping us strung out is obviously good for the bottom line. Oh well, It will mean nothing in a few weeks, but I think it's a decision based more on board room politics and less on fan service.

3. The level cap for Beta Phase 4 is level 20. In closed beta the level cap was level 35, why change it? I am not one to complain, seeing I only got one class to level 35 during Phase 3 and that took me more than 2-3 days. It's very similar to the free version of World of Warcraft. Level 20 really doesn't give you much to go on, but on the other hand it's an industry standard. I know this will bother some of the harder core players out there and it seems unnecessary. One more decision which appears to be derived from business related motives and not fan service.

4. The Playstation 3 will be updated to have a screenshot ability! I can't tell you how nice that is to hear. I play on the PS3 and have been completely hamstrung when it comes to writing guides or even taking screenshots of content I want to write about. That is now solved as of Phase 4! Some of you have asked why I don't write some guides or other tutorials, that was the reason. It's hard to write a guide when you have to get your images by surfing Google Images. It's also been very taxing having to ask my friends to take my screenshots. I love them dearly, but photographers -- they are not. I can't wait to share with you my very own creations!

Early access codes can be registered  after August 20th. That's 12 days later than I thought, but that's what we get for not living in Japan I suppose. Things are moving along nicely! Arcanist will be available for Phase 4 and apparently Unicorn Mounts are a thing...

Mists of Pandaria: First Impressions

I have very few negative things to say about the WoW . I'm not one of those "race to 90" type of player, but I have been playing since the day of the release and I've been having a fantastic time.

I know that I'm in the minority when I say that questing is my favorite part of the game. I enjoy exploring the world, picking up quests, getting new gear, and just generally immersing myself in the game's world. I seriously cannot relate to the player who complains that it's taking too long to get to 90. I was, however, immensely pleased when I dinged 86 just last night. ;) That should give you some idea where I'm at in Pandaria. Okay, okay. I will admit that I'm chomping at the bit to get the new cloud serpent mount. All good things...

Pet Battles

Prior to the release, I was really looking forward to this new aspect of the game. It gives the player an alternate course of action instead of the constant raiding, PuGs, and leveling. The reality of this feature totally lived up to my expectations. The cheesy Final Fantasy-esque music. The silly turn-based attacks. The cutesy pets whose sole purpose in life is to kick ass. I love it. It's fun. It's distracting. It's addicting. I feel bad choosing to level certain companions over others. This has led to me trying to level several at one time which means that my highest level pet is only 11, lol. Questing in Pandaria and seeing the potential, capture-able pets makes me drool. I can't wait until I get a pet high enough so that I can start acquiring the new pets. 

The Scenery

Come on. How can you not appreciate this??

If you don't like the scenery in Pandaria, I can only assume that you're color blind. It's visually striking and totally pleasing to the eye. If I hear one more person gripe about the graphics in WoW, I may have to turn stalker and pound on that person a bit. Maybe the graphics are not top shelf, but I still don't see what the complaining is all about.

Pandas. Squishy, Loveable, Ninja, Pandas!

This is another popular topic about which people like to complain. Do people know much about real, in the wild, pandas? Sure, they look cute, but I would like to see you come between a cub and it's mother. Polar bears, black bears, and grizzlies are cute too. Did you hear about that hiker that was taking video of a grizzly? All they found of him was the video. Anyway, my panda monk is only a level 14 so I can't speak on an "expert" level, but I'm having great fun playing her. She's pretty and she's pretty vicious. 

My One Complaint

I think having cross-realm areas is a fantastic idea. I really like seeing other players when I'm out and about questing. However...It would have been nice if that had been turned off for the first few weeks after the expansion release. Over population is now the issue instead of dead areas. I was questing with my lowbie panda in the Northern Barrens and there weren't enough quilboars and sacks of rice to be found for all the dozens of pandas trying to do the same quests. It was just a bit frustrating. After a while, I gave up and went for some pet battles instead. 

To Conclude

I've run into a few glitches here and there. I've run across totally asshole-y players stealing all the quest kills and gathers. What's new? After playing beta, I can see a big difference in the number of things that needed to be fixed versus the more polished final release. I am a realist. I expected hangups. So what? I think MoP is a complete breath of fresh air when compared to the somewhat more intense expansions of WotLK and Cataclysm. I still have no regrets signing up for the annual pass. I'll more than likely renew or, at the very least, keep my subscription current. I'm still having fun with the game, reading other's blog posts and tweets, and being part of the community that is WoW. I'm definitely not ready to throw in the towel. 

To Transmog or Not to Transmog

   This is one aspect of WoW in which I have yet to immerse myself. On the one hand, I think I've gotten so used to wearing a mish mash of gear that it doesn't really even hit my radar. On the other hand, I have a hard time wrapping my head around running dungeons and raids just to get a piece of gear solely because of how it looks. Huh? What? Then I have to figure out what look I even want to go after. Basically, I don't know where to start.

    Every once in a while I'll actually take notice of a piece of gear that one of my toons is wearing and stop long enough to think, "That looks nifty!" Then I'll save it back in my bank in hopes of finding other pieces along the line that will match. Then I won't play that toon for a few weeks, go back, clean out her bank and realize that the old, outdated gear I just sold was something that I had been saving for transmog purposes, rush back to the vendor to get it back, and discover that it's been bumped off the buy back tab and forever lost in the mists. I do this. Often. I really don't think transmogging is for me.
